A week later, Joseph asked me to marry him. I said yes, and the following days flew by with a speed that left me dizzy. We spoke with our parents, and they blessed our plans. In the late spring we would meet with Bishop Jacob and tell him we wanted to hold the wedding in the early summer—after school had released for the year.
The only other person I told was Miriam. I would miss her terribly once I married and stopped teaching, though we would still see each other at church meetings. I told myself nothing between us would change, but of course it did. And perhaps God had a plan for that as well.
The fact that she hadn’t married yet worried her parents. I knew because her mother, Abigail, had once asked me whether Miriam ever spoke about any of the single men in our district. She had, but only to remark on how young they seemed or how they would make good husbands for the younger women. I didn’t think this would alleviate her mother’s fears, so I shook my head no in response to her question.
It was the last Monday in November when everything once again changed.
Joseph had picked me up and driven me to school. I could have taken my own buggy, but it was pleasant spending the time together on the rides to the school on Mondays and from the school on Fridays.
I liked to arrive early, but I was later than usual that Monday morning in November.
Joseph had squeezed my hand and leaned in to sneak a kiss since no one else was waiting outside the school.
I’d run through the snowy morning with my heart galloping faster than Joseph’s mare when he set her at a full trot.
Clutching my coat tighter, I hurried up the steps and into the schoolhouse.
Miriam had arrived ahead of me. Her lessons were already written on the board. She’d also set the tablets, erasers, and chalk on each desk. The woodstove blazed warmly, defying the weather outside.
Miriam turned and smiled. As usual, she looked as if she’d arrived hours before. Her dark hair was pinned neatly beneath her kapp, and she wore a navy blue dress and black apron. I remember thinking that if any of our single men could see her in the schoolroom, in the one place she felt most at home, they’d be lining up to take her home from a singing. It wouldn’t happen, unfortunately. Miriam rarely attended singings any longer, claiming she was too old for such things.
She had helped me to forgive Joseph, and I wanted her to know the immense joy of being in lieb. I wanted Miriam to experience the delight of finding the one God had intended for her. I was impatient for her to find this someone before I left her alone at the schoolhouse.
“Am I late?” My shoes echoed against the wooden floor as I hurried toward the front of the room. Pulling off my coat, scarf, and gloves, I dropped them on my desk.
